The training manual “HIV/AIDS Stigma and Human Rights: A Resource Manual for NGOs, Community Groups and Persons Living With AIDS” is based on the findings of a recent research project carried out in South Africa. The purpose of the Tswelopele Project was to understand the manifestation of stigma and the resulting human rights violations associated with HIV/AIDS in a local community setting. The manual is the product of collaborative research between the South Africa Programme at the NCHR and the Centre for the Study of AIDS, University of Pretoria. The training manual aims to tackle stigma at a local level. It is a practical tool introducing rights in an accessible format, with basic information on HIV/AIDS, why it is a human rights issue and common human rights issues for People Living With AIDS. The manual has already formed the basis of a four day workshop with community members and home-based carers for People Living With AIDS. Other workshops are to take place with health care workers, police, local government and social clubs in the area.
