These case studies from East Africa demonstrate and discuss community- based initiatives that use human rights to frame issues of access to women’s and men’s rights to sexual and reproductive health in Ethiopia and Kenya. The paper 1) Explains the participatory process that staff took with communities to learn how rights and responsibilities were defined by communities themselves; 2) Provides examples of how staff planned and then actually used this new knowledge in designing strategies and educational messages to help communities to address issues related to rights and specifically to female genital cutting; and then, 3) Discusses lessons learned and questions raised by project staff when taking an inductive approach to rights in community-based health projects.
