To commemorate the International Day of the Child and the 17th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, Relief Society of Tigray (REST) in conjunction with Mekelle Child Centered Forum (MCCF) will hold a discussion forum on the rights of the child, themed: ‘How can governments best promote their commitments to the best interest of the child?’

The two day panel discussion will take place from 1 November to 2 November 2006 in Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia. It aims at evaluating the existing policies that the regional government have towards the protection of children’s rights and at examining and exploring suggestions and contributions on how the regional government can best protect the rights of children by implementing policies and structures that have children’s best interest at heart.

The end of the discussion aims to be a platform from which policy makers and advocates can draw experiences or conclusions that can help in the formulation of regional children’s policies, policies that will help in the protection of the best interest of the child.

Child rights professionals' participation in this discussion is crucial as it is what they will contribute that will determine the kinds of policies that will exist in their region. The more we share experiences about the policies that exist in our region and how they help in the preservation of child rights, the more we are likely to ensure that we are moving in the right direction towards the upholding of children’s rights.
