Organisation aims and activities: The United Nations Children's Fund , UNICEF is the largest development agency dedicated to working exclusively for children in the fields of health, education, protection and participation.


Further details: UNICEF works with other UN agencies , governments and non- government organisations and with the private sector to provide community based services in primary health care , nutrition , basic education and safe water and sanitation in over 140 countries. Primary areas of work: UNICEF has assisted child focused projects in the Pacific since the 1950s. UNICEF's commitment to the Pacific countries comprises two programmes - one based in Port Moresby , for the children of Papua New Guinea and a Multi Country Programme for the rest of the Pacific based in Fiji. the multi-country UNICEF Pacific Programme includes Programmes of Co-operation with the Governments of the Cook Islands , Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Paluau , Republic of Marshall Islands Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga Tuvalu, Vanuatu and Western Samoa UNICEF Pacific Programme also has four intercountry programmes providing support to the thirteen country programmes, these are Health and Nutrition, Child and Youth Advocacy, Education,and Planning and Monitoring The objectives of the UNICEF Pacific Programme of Cooperation is to facilitate national programmes for children and their families and to sustain national goal achievements through the promotion of the CRC. Pacific goals for children To reduce infant mortality rates and under five mortality rates by at least 30% in those countries with moderate to high mortality rates and by 20% in those countries with low mortality rates To reduce maternal mortality rates by one half from 1990 levels To reduce the level of moderate and severe malnutrition in children under 5 years by 50% in Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands , Federated States of Micronesia, Western Samoa and Fiji To significantly reduce the prevalence of Vitamin A deficiency of Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia To eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders in Fiji To continue to ensure completion of primary school education by at least 90% of Pacific children with an additional focus on quality of education (including life skills and access to Early Childhood Care and Education programmes) greater community participation and enhanced parental support To improve the protection of children and youth and their families affected by rapid social change To assist communities and governments in understanding the need for, and the nature of , monitoring the situation of children to ensure all articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child are achieved.
