Children's Ombudsperson

The Ombudsman Act of 1999 (http://www.paclii.org/vu/legis/consol_act/oa114/) established the Office of the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman is empowered to enquire into the conduct of any government agency; to enquire into defects in law or administrative practice; to enquire into suspected discriminatory practice by a government agency; to inquire into the conduct of a leader; and to undertake mediation between complainants and government agencies.

In the State's 1999 report to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, Vanuatu reported that it was proposing to establish a Children's Office and a National Children's Committee. The National Children's Committee has since been established to act as a focal point on matters relating to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, but the body is yet to be reviewed to establish its compatibility with the Convention.
