The course provides an overview of research methods in conducting research, both qualitative and quantitative, with marginal and hidden populations, such as children victims of exploitation or trafficking, migrants, homeless, affected by HIV/AIDS, drug addicted, etc.
The course introduces the main theories and approaches focusing on participatory research using different frameworks and techniques. It explores topics such as the use of qualitative and quantitative methods, estimation challenges (such as the use of capture-recapture technique applied to social sciences), and ethical considerations arising when conducting this type of research. Focusing on action-oriented research, the course will also touch the use of research in monitoring and evaluating the impact of actions and programmes.
