Summary:

At its sixty-fifth session, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to submit a report on the rights of the child containing information on the status of the CRC and the issues addressed in the resolution on the rights of the child, with a focus on the rights of children with disabilities.

Focus of the report

· Non-discrimination and equality

Including institutional arrangements for children with disabilities and how these need to be reinforced; remedies in case of violations; awareness-raising and educational campaign; girls with disabilities.

· Child Protection:

Including sexual (and other) violence against children with disabilities; children with disabilities in mainstream child protection systems and services; deinstitutionalisation of children with disabilities; birth registration; Protection from forced sterilization; Children with high level support needs, including, when needed, the right to have a personal assistant; Strengthening national institutions' protection framework/data collection/accountability

· Education/Early Childhood Development:

Including inclusive education and early identification and early intervention

· Health/Nutrition/WASH:

Including access of children with disabilities to prevention and intervention (with support to families)/immunization, water and sanitation, primary health care; access to reproductive services for adolescents with disabilities; HIV and AIDS; social protection systems.

· Emergencies/Humanitarian Action:

Including children with disabilities in refugee situations and other emergency situations.

· Crosscutting issues:

Including inclusion of children with disabilities in MDGs priorities and the Equity Agenda; data collection/M&E instruments for mainstreaming; participation of children and adolescents with disabilities;


 

Make a contribution

Interested organizations and individuals are invited to submit a contribution (max. 3 pages plus attachments) in electronic format (preferably WORD) on the above mentioned issues or other issues related to children with disabilities, by 20 May 2011.
