Date:

Organisation:

Concerned for Working Children

Resource type:

Training Materials

Summary:

The children of the Makkala Panchayats, of the eight Panchayats in Karnataka, that we are working in took a decision to define what was good or bad for them.

They decided that their definition should form the basis of all interventions in these Panchayats towards these Panchayats becoming 'child labour free'. This series of publications is primarily intended for the children who wrote it. However, we felt that this would be of interest to other children and practitioners working in the field of child labour, children's rights and promoting children's participation.

In my opinion, what we can do is to have a database which tells us why the children are being forced to work. There may be several reasons like no family income, the parents have no work, the parents are sick, the children have no parents, the greed of the employers to make more money at the expense of cheap child labour, etc, etc.

Once we know the exact reasons, we will have the opportunity to focus on concrete areas, and then seek solutions to prevent child labour.
