The government of Argentina has withdrawn the nomination of Dr. Norberto Liwski as a candidate for the upcoming elections for the Committee on the Rights of the Child for political reasons. His current tenure ends next February 2007. This makes his re-election practically impossible.

During a meeting with Red latino americana y caribeña por la defensa de los derechos de los niños, niñas y adolescentes (REDLAMYC) last October in Montevideo, Uruguay, the national coalitions highlighted the importance of having two key allies within the Committee to pursue their agendas - Norberto and Rosa Maria Ortiz, who would also strengthen Latin America’s presence.

The exact reasons for the Argentinean Government's decision are unknown, but this decision will affect the efforts made at regional and global level to promote the application of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

All concerned individuals are invited to take action. Letters (in Spanish if possible) expressing support for Dr. Liwski and requesting the government of Argentina to reconsider its decision should be sent to :
