AZERBAIJAN: Internet demonised to keep citizens offline
The Azerbaijani government is waging an aggressive media campaign against the Internet. Authorities say that social media use is a bad form of citizenship and opposes the country's mentality, as well as proclaiming that social media users suffer mental disorders and cannot maintain relationships. By framing the Internet in such a negative light, citizens are deterred from using it, especially women and girls, with only 14 per cent ever having done so.
