The UK Government is reviewing how it defines child poverty. Iain Duncan Smith, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, says it is not enough to just look at how much money a family has. He says other factors, particularly parents' drug and alcohol problems need to be taken into account because, he says, given these people money may just make them spend more money on drugs and alcohol. But campaigners say that ascribing child poverty to addiction is not accurate - less than 7% of people claiming welfare are problem drug users.
