Roma children
The European Court of Human Rights recently ruled against the Czech Republic for racial discrimination against Roma in the education system.
Romani history has been characterised by severe repression, and persisting discrimination against Roma across the world has a widespread effect on children’s rights. For example, various organisations have reported they suffer from discrimination in healthcare and schools in particular.
In November 2007, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the Czech Republic had practised racial discrimination by wrongly channelling Roma children into remedial education schools. Other cases have since been filed, for example against Croatia.
