On 8th April 1971 – forty-two years ago – the Roma organised their first congress in London with the aim of gaining more political freedom. This date has since been officially known as the International Day of the Roma. For this occasion, Terre des hommes field teams have set up a large number of recreational activities (following the example of the photo taken during the march through the streets of Pristina). Roma children in Albania were able to play at being apprentice photographers for the day. They were each handed a camera and told to let their imagination run wild. Terre des hommes has been present in Eastern Europe for decades – in particular in Rumania , Albania and Kosovo – fighting poverty, segregation and social exclusion amongst children, but in particular those from the Roma communities who often live in extremely precarious conditions.
