UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women
Radhika Coomaraswarmy
(E/CN.4/1999/68)
Country visit: 7 April 1998
Report published: 10 March 1999

In 1991, the women's shelter, supported by the Association for the Protection of Mistreated Women and Children, was opened. It has proved to be an important source of assistance for women victims of violence, particularly of domestic violence. It offers temporary shelter, qualified counselling and personal assistance in a secure environment to physically and psychologically abused women and their children. This project is financed with government funds. The shelter provided refuge for 15 abused women in the first half of 1997, only 6 of whom were citizens. The shelter serves as a model for other jurisdictions. (Annex II)
