European Prisoners’ Children Campaign Launch

Monday, 3 June marked the launch of the 4th Annual European Prisoners’
Children Campaign by Eurochips, the European Network for Children of
Imprisoned Parents.

Eurochips is a non-‐profit umbrella organization working on behalf of the
children of imprisoned parents throughout Europe. The network has over 30
members in 15 European countries.

The Not my Crime, Still my Sentence awareness-‐raising campaign focuses on the
vulnerabilities and challenges of children of prisoners. 25% of these children
are at high risk for mental health illness. Recent research highlights the
importance of maintaining contact with the imprisoned parent for the well-‐being
of the child – which is the focus of the 2013 campaign.

The campaign runs from 3 June to 12 July with the intention of gaining over 6 000
signatures on an e-‐petition to Jean Lambert, MEP. The e‐letter asks that Lambert
advocate for the cause at the European level by:

• Encourage more flexible prison visiting hours for kids so as not to
interfere with school.
• Ensure prisons provide welcome, comforting visiting environments to
promote quality contact.
• Encourage regular telephone contact to maintain everyday child-‐parent
interaction.

Several online tools have been created to promote the 2013 campaign –
including a website, e-‐posters and e-‐petition signature widgets that users may
share and use on their own sites or blogs.

More detailed information regarding the cause is available on the campaign site,
including artwork, statements and policy recommendations from children of
prisoners.
